			East Lake was formed artificially among small hills called Qingshi Hill. The project began as early as Han Dynasty. Working people went on with the project for hundreds of years continuously and finally their talent and creativity together with their hard work resulted in what it is now.



	During the Qing Dynasty, someone called Taogong discovered its natural beauty and dammed its valley. Outside the dam is the ancient Jinghang Canal, while inside it is the East Lake.

	For hundreds of years, it remains one of the most fascinating and attractive places of interest. It lies five kilometres east of the city of Shaoxing. Different traffic means provide convenient access to its site.




	You can row a small kind of boat on the lake, through ancient stone bridges and into the Taogong Cave. It’s really like travelling in a natural picture.


	Many Chinese emperors and kings once paid visits here and left their handwritings praising its beauty. A pavilion is standing near the Taogong Cave. Leaving the boat, you can climb up the steps leading to the summit of the hill. Returning from the hill, you can take another boat further on to a small island surrounded by the green waters and steep cliffs.
